Grieving Parents: England’s New Baby Loss Certificates
Baby loss certificates introduced in England
England has introduced a new law that allows parents who have experienced the loss of a baby before 24 weeks of pregnancy to receive a Certificate of Birth Resulting in Stillbirth (CBRS).
This certificate will officially recognize their baby’s existence and provide grieving parents with a tangible document to commemorate their child.
Previously, parents could only receive a certificate if their baby was stillborn after 24 weeks of pregnancy. The introduction of the CBRS aims to acknowledge the pain and loss experienced by parents of babies lost earlier in pregnancy.
The certificate can be used to update official records, such as birth and death registers, and may also be helpful in accessing support services and benefits.
This move has been welcomed by support groups and charities, who believe it will help parents to cope with their grief and honor the memory of their lost babies.
